Contest Brief

I'm seeking a logo and visual identity for a nonprofit called Hosts for Humanity.

MISSION
Hosts for Humanity connects families and friends of patients traveling to receive medical care with volunteer hosts offering accommodations in their homes.

PURPOSE OF NONPROFIT
Serious illnesses and medical emergencies impact a patient’s entire family, especially when they must travel to receive care. When traveling with a patient, family and friends often find themselves removed from their communities and support networks. Far from home, not all of these caregivers are eligible for hospital hospitality homes such as the Ronald McDonald House or Hope Cancer Lodge. Often caregivers are forced to stay in hotels close to the hospital, a lodging choice that becomes increasingly expensive as their loved ones spend more time receiving care. Family and friends of patients need a way to find lodging that allows them to provide comfort and support for their loved ones without creating an additional financial burden. In addition, family and friends themselves need a nurturing environment so they can do the challenging work of caregiving.

Hosts for Humanity connects families and friends of patients traveling to receive medical care with volunteer hosts offering accommodations in their homes. By connecting patient-families with volunteer hosts, Hosts for Humanity strives to create a comfortable space for caregivers in addition to easing the financial burden associated when traveling with loved ones receiving medical care.

HISTORY
My name is Jenny Owens and I conceptualized Hosts for Humanity due to health challenges my son faced when he was born last year. In April of 2016, my husband and I were thrilled to welcome our son Maximus to the world. Within hours of his birth, Max was diagnosed with a rare condition called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). His diaphragm was not fully formed at birth, allowing his bowels to move into his chest cavity, displacing his heart and and crushing and impacting the development of his left lung. The doctors gave Max a 50% chance of survival and it was a very rough start the first few months as Maximus and physicians fought for his life. He spent several weeks in the NICU and more time in the children's hospital as he underwent several surgeries and procedures to repair his diaphragm, which allowed his lung to re-inflate and his heart to migrate back to the correct side of his chest. Although there's still a present but diminishing threat of a re-herniation of his diaphragm, I'm happy to report that Max is now an animated and chunky 9-month old who is growing and thriving. We feel such gratitude for the excellent care he received at Johns Hopkins. You can read more about his recovery story here: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/maximusowens/journal.

When we were in the NICU we could get home in 10 minutes, but many families traveled hours to be there each day and stayed months longer than we did. I thought about it all night and most of our stay. And I wondered - what if people living nearby hospitals could volunteer rooms in their homes to traveling with loved ones for care?

Hosts for Humanity is an online platform that matches volunteer hosts with patient families seeking a place to stay while their loved ones receive care. Volunteer hosts are able to list available accommodations in their homes. Whether an apartment for a few days, or an entire home for a month, or a garden for an afternoon, Hosts for Humanity connects family and friends of patients with volunteer hosts, allowing them to stay in a low-fare and supportive environment.

Thank you for all the great submissions. I like a more modern design, and am not a big fan of the leaf/tree concept. I want to channel feelings of warmth, comfort, compassion and home.
