Contest Brief

This is a contest for designing a book cover for an upcoming Perpetual Imagination release. The design will be for the cover of the book "Oedipussy" by Solomon Deep. The book is about the leader of a grunge rock band whose taste for fame and glory is cut short when he is in high school, and needs to reconfigure his life in order to move forward after a tragedy.

What we are looking for is two things:
1. A vector version of the logo for the book. See preliminary sketch attached - but should be re-made to streamline it and make it look better.
2. A cover for the book that has a 1990s grunge rock girl that prominently displays the logo and the author's name in a manner that makes sense for the book, is captivating, and obviously would sell copies of the book. The title and logo will be in front of a drawing or photograph of a grunge girl with a captivating view of her mouth, neck, and breasts with cleavage in a distressed tee shirt. The logo could possibly be in the style of a tattoo on her chest, or perhaps some sort of design on the tee shirt. We had an idea that the author's name would be "signed" across a breast in the style of a fan-girl groupie, but we were unsure of how to make that look interesting. See preliminary sketch idea attached.

The look we have been thinking about is in the style of comic-book punk, such as the comic books published by Suicide Girls (SFW Picture: http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/comicsalliance.com/files/2013/07/Screen-Shot-2013-07-17-at-11.07.02-AM-630x416.jpg) or Tank Girl (SFW Picture: http://pre00.deviantart.net/75e6/th/pre/i/2014/188/9/9/tank_girl_for_trinquette_by_revolutiongraphics-d7pkz1u.jpg) and if those links don't work, just google them. Would consider a photograph version if it is done well, but unsure of how that would be executed to look good.

The design should not be exactly what is in the example if you have a better idea., but would also love to work with the winner to change a couple things if need be. Do not hesitate to move somewhat outside of our ideas illustrated above. It needs to be rocking, sexy, and make both men and women want to read the book.

The size of the image should be very hi-res, and the book cover itself will be 6" x 9" (15.24 x 22.86 cm), but should offer some room for bleed/crop/etc. It should be at least 600 dpi, but would appreciate more if we were to print it on a poster, so essentially as big as you can make it while keeping a 2x3 aspect ratio. Furthermore, we were planning on something for the rear cover, but if you wanted to extend the image for a rear cover that might work (and leave room for copy), feel free.

Book covers for previous titles by Deep are available at http://perpetualimagination.com/?page_id=9

We will keep all rights to the images as a work for hire, BUT will credit you personally in the title page and on the back cover of the book, as well as include a link to your website if you wish. Of course, you can use the images for your own portfolio and promotion.

Thank you so much for your entries, and good luck!

Hi perpetualimagine, I am working on your project now...about 4 hours into the illustration haha. I Hope you can give the contest the maximum amount of time to ensure we can produce quality artwork for you! I would like to know two things if possible...1) Are you able to divulge the name of the male protagonist in the story? 2) Has the male protagonist every been an active member of the band, and performed in his past? Would appreciate your insight as I customize the artwork to fit the symbolic references of the story. Appreciate your response!

    Couple more clarifications for everyone...

    1. This is a book whose main character is a man, so the idea here for the cover is that it is almost a groupie who we've stumbled across coming out of the show or something. Furthermore, it might be the girlfriend of our protagonist and main singer, who is a character in the book. So while we were thinking a woman for the cover, it might be misleading if it appears the book is about a woman rather than a cover that features a woman.

    2. We were looking at some of the entries, and this is going to sound weird, but we are looking for provocative and punk rock, but not pornographic. (here are some alluring but not overly super sexual album covers: Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights or Ween's Chocolate and Cheese or Pixie's Surfer Rosa or The Cars Candy-O or even Patty Smith's Horses even though there is no skin or nudity)

We were thinking of adding an idea... What if also people might want to submit something that looks like the cover but in the style of a concert poster? Just a thought to see if different people who weren't going to enter would want to jump on and give that a shot too...

Quick clarification for all entrants - great job of vectorizing the example of the logo - but we were hoping for something original in the spirit of the shape of the example, not just a vectored version of the original. In other words, filled in, cleaned up, and not looking like a rudimentary sketch. The reason we want a separate vector is to have a standard to use in all copy, adverts, spine, inside, etc, as well as part of the cover design. Thanks for all of your entries so far!

can we just draw a small version first, then draw the big resolution after selected as winner?

This is a reasonable question. The main concern about this would be quality, so if you are able to make a small version that illustrates the commitment to quality in a higher-res version, I don't see a big difference as long as you indicate that it is a preliminary version in your submission.
