Contest Brief

I need a drawn image of a trout fishing fly such as a “grasshopper” imitation, floating at the end of a Fly line on a river. Including a fisherman in the distance is optional.

The grasshopper is trying to resist the pull of the line by planting five of its six feet against the surface of the water like it is trying slow itself down. Its feet should probably have shoes or boots. In its sixth “hand”, the grasshopper holds up a sign or poster on a stick, saying “Resist!”. You can get ideas for a clenched fist image by Googling “resist image poster” and clicking on “images”. Color combinations are up to the artist.

The fly line can be of any color, although most common are tan, bright green, yellow or orange, in order to show contrast with the surface of the river. The fly line should be “saying” "Resistance is Futile".

This is a famous line from “Star Trek”. You can Google images of that phrase and find cartoon images of the Borg character or other images which reflect the Borg who says it.

How you get the fly line to communicate the message is up to the artist.

Feel free to ask any questions.

I am uploading some images of a fly line, a fishing fly imitating a grasshopper, and a cartoon grasshopper. Please do not copy any of these images because they are already copyrighted. They are just for me to communicate the general ideas to you.
Thank you.

I have just added two more images of grasshopper flies dated 21 February to show how the small eye of the hook is located where the "throat" of the insect would be and the hook emerges around the lower stomach. The long shank of the hook is completely hidden within the fly, so it does not need to be illustrated.

Thank each one of you for your interesting and creative work!

I'm going to comment on the first entry to try to answer the question about style.
It has nice colors and the shoes on the insect's feet are very clever. But the illustration should be zoomed in on the insect and the line. Tent and log are extraneous to the point of the cartoon, which is that the line is going to pull on the fly and make it float unnaturally to the side. A real insect (vs. the artificial fly) would float down the river and the point of the cartoon is to communicate that the line will be pulled by the current and drag the fly in an unnatural way.

The shoes on the feet are excellent because they are a contrasting color which calls attention to them and they are humorous. But they should be pushing against the water like when a dog stiffens his legs and you pull the dog on a leash, creating in the water some skid marks. Finally this well drawn insect is a praying mantis, which does not live near water. See the attached files of both a grasshopper and a mayfly.

So the points are : change the insect, focus should be on insect, the insect's feet should look like rushing against the water, doubt : should the fly line be connected to insect or not? Like I have hooked the mantis... And are the flags apt to your vision or I should change it?

Hi, is there a specific style you have in mind for your concept? I'd also be able to work better if I had a general idea of the size and format of drawing. Thanks!

May be used as a book illustration, so size and format do not matter much to me. Should be easily understood at a glance.
