Contest Brief

Looking for talented designers to help develop a conceptual floor plan and renderings for a 42,000 square foot homeless shelter.

Our shelter will have beds for approximately 200 people, large bathroom and locker facilities, cooking and dining facilities, co-working spaces, training areas, and a factory.

Our company has created an initial floor plan and model of the space with all of the above items included. (CAD plans are provided to use as a base). The property consists of 6 warehouses which are 6,500 square feet each. Two of the warehouses are for sleeping and bathing. One warehouse is for cooking, eating and co working. One warehouse is for a training center, and one warehouse is for a factory. The final warehouse will not be part of the project at this time. The warehouses have been assigned their role. We want the designer to play around with the internal layout of the warehouses and develop a creative floor plan.

The following is a description of the requirements for each warehouse:

Sleeping Warehouse:
- The warehouses for sleeping are marked 3100 and 3110. They will each contain: sleeping pods (As shown in exhibit 1) for approximately 100 people, a large bathroom containing 10 toilets, 10 sinks, 10 showers and a locker room with approximately 100 lockers. Additional amenities will include a lounge area with soft seating and television. The entrance to the sleeping areas will be from the warehouse numbered 3106 and each entrance will have a reception area for security.

Cooking / Dining / Coworking warehouse:
- The warehouse 3106 will be the main entrance to the sleeping and co working warehouses. This warehouse will feature a full commercial kitchen, a dining area for approximately 120 people, table space for people to work from, and private 4 person conference rooms. The seating in this space should be flexible so that people can use it for both dining and working. This warehouse is meant to be a social space. The environment should be comfortable and foster community.

Training Center Warehouse:
- Warehouse 3116 will be the training center. The purpose of this warehouse is to help develop skills and learning for the people staying in the shelter. The entrance will be from the street. There should be a reception area by the entrance for security. The training center should have an educational feel to it. We would like to see a small stage or platform that can be utilized for large group learning sessions and a large screen. We would like to see smaller open classrooms with seating for 10 to 25 people. There should be a small enclosed room that can serve as a computer lab with 5 to 15 work stations.

Factory Warehouse:
- The final warehouse will be a metal stud fabrication facility where people staying at the shelter can learn manufacturing skills. The warehouse will be used for manufacturing tiny homes made out of metal studs. This space will have a metal stud machine in it for producing the metal studs for the tiny homes. The warehouse should have a secure room for storing tools, an area with large workshop tables, an area designated for storing materials, a break room with tiny kitchen, and two restrooms.

Deliverables:
We are looking to obtain from the designer:
1 Conceptual floor plan showing all the warehouses with furniture, room labels and callouts.
2-3 renderings for each of the warehouses (sleeping, dining/coworking, training and factory warehouses) 8-12 Renderings total.
1-2 renderings of the exterior. (The exterior is currently a plain brick wall, we want to have murals or other design elements added and depicted in the exterior rendering. Exhibit 3 shows the building exterior)

The company providing this shelter is called Bee Smart. We would like the logo to be included throughout the project. (Logo included below, Exhibit 2)

The cad files will be included as well as some photos of the exterior. The design for the sleeping pods is also included below as exhibit 1.

Hey Salsabeel, great question. The intent of using the pods was to provide a decent level of privacy for the occupant. We were inspired by the 9 hour capsule hotel in Japan. A benefit to using the pods is the ability to stack them. However, If you think you have an idea that can provide some degree of privacy and approximately 100 beds per sleeping warehouse, then we would love to see it.

Good evening! This project seems really interesting. Would you expect us to propose another design for the floor plan or should we stick to the layout that you presented on the .dwg files? Thank you and I´ll be working on it.

The idea is fantastic. Is there any cultural reference we can get to work with? As, ages, location, etc.

Hey Radames, Thanks for posting your question. The project will be located in South Los Angeles and serving adults 18 years and older. We anticipate that we will have one sleeping warehouse dedicated to men and the other dedicated to women. The people who will be staying in our shelter are chronically homeless and will require supportive services in order to get through the day. We envision creating a shelter that provides people with a sense of home. We want this shelter to be a place for people to heal, and to get their lives back on track. We don't want this shelter to feel like an army barracks.
