There are existing solutions out there for this (valhalla, OSRM for instance), but they either aren't stable enough or aren't quite precise enough for my needs. Ideally we'd prototype something in like python and start with the standard HMM based approaches and then if necessary move to a compiled language for better performance once a good solution is found (I'm not partial to what that is).
