In Malaysia, the German language is often learnt as a second or third language (L2/L3) , if at all. From observations at University Putra Malaysia, the researcher has found that most of the L1 Chinese speakers who are enrolled on the Bachelor of Arts (Foreign Languages – German) program or the optional foreign language course, have the difficulty with Agreement in German finite verbs. This could be due to the fact that the Chinese language (including Mandarin Chinese) lacks inflectional morphology. In this case, the role played by the learners’ first language (L1) would come into play.
In addition, German syntax has the Verb Second (V2) phenomenon, which seems to compound the difficulty. It would be interesting to know if the Malaysian L1 Chinese learners of German are able to place the finite verb in the right position and if so, at which stage of learning the German language. Since the option of V2 is lacking in the syntax of Chinese, do learners go through stages in the acquisition of German, in particular the finite verbs.
Based on the discussion thus far, this study set out to investigate the acquisition of German by Malaysian L1 Chinese speakers, in particular the interlanguage (IL) development of the learners’ L2 German.
