Blog Outreach and Public Relations

This one is going to be interesting.

I run a website that offers a business service. Many other companies run the same business, but we're better - profoundly better, different, differentiated, etc. But they've been online for years, have a slug of backlinks and big advertising budgets. How do we spread the word about our business?

We're working on a number of fronts to solve the problem. I've got an idea, though, and I want to see if it can be put into action.

See, I think that we can identify lists of bloggers that are blogging about our category. We can then reach out to them to introduce ourselves in an e-mail. Nicely and with respect. Not in annoying comment spam - I mean, in an e-mail that's composed specifically to ask each blogger for coverage. If I'm right, and our service is useful, we should expect to get coverage - which means traffic moving from that blog to our site.

I have a first list of bloggers. The project is to make contact with 100 bloggers for us. Your e-mails must be nice, original, individualized, reflect the content of the blog, etc. We'd like to reach out a few times so that we can understand this is a legitimate way of finding customers and building legitimate inbound links.
