Our goal is to replace our current DNS infrastructure with a dynamic split-horizon DNS. For that we need a bind module ( implemented like the DLZ is ) that wil will execute the following logic: For the flow of the plugin please check the attached image. The deliverable needs to be a patch that can be applied to the latest stable BIND ( 9.10.1 ) and that does not change the way bind works in any way or form except the specified scenario. The deliverable will be a plugin and not a patch to the way bind runs. Proposed db: domains: id: int domain: varchar ns1: varchar ns2: varchar domain_class: id: int domain_id: FK to domains->id ip_class: varchar ( of ip classes allowed: eg: [login to view URL] ) mappins: id: int domain_id: FK to domains->id from: varchar ( eg [login to view URL] ) to: varchar ( eg [login to view URL], so when a request comes in and the ns for the domain will return [login to view URL], we will change that to [login to view URL] )

Hello, We have got plenty of experience with working over DNS stacks, specially with low level languages for performance gains. There is one question here in the attached flow diagram. Shouldn't some kind of caching be present in the split horizon flow so as to avoid too many DB queries? Because for split horizon queries, the bench marking results will be quite miserable. How much queries per second are you expecting for split horizon domains? Some configuration parameters need to be added to BIND9 so as to support this feature. We can discuss this at a later stage. We would be needing some kind of server at some stage, where we can stress test the server for memory leaks.

While the diagram is quite clear the requirement that this functionality to be a plugin (not a patch) is not. BIND does not have a plugin API to allow a conventional loadable plugin architecture. The required functionality does need to modify the configuration file parsing as well as BIND's internal logic so it can be done in a patch to the desired BIND version but not as external module.
