Adaptation of Listening section of EyeSpeak into a web-based “flash?? application “EyeSpeak?? is a PC based application that teaches English, using speech recognition to teach pronunciation, as well as teaching listening and vocabulary. VPSL wants to make a part of it, the Listening section into a flash based app for use in a web site. The idea is that users can use it without having to install anything onto the local machine. The flash program like the download version needs the ability to display in different languages, Chinese and English are required. The program will most likely be used with the instructions/skin in simplified Chinese, but also needs to work with them in English. ## Deliverables How EyeSpeak is organised: Download and install the demo version “[login to view URL]? attached (set installDir C:\vpsl\eyespeak for simplicity) The important components are: 1. The sound files These are stored under C:\VPSL\eyespeak\data\Sounddata\words_dat\Brian C:\VPSL\eyespeak\data\Sounddata\words_dat\Katie There are many files there, however only the .mp3 files are needed for this application. Each word in the program is either said by Brian or Katie, but not both (to save space) 2. The database This is under database\VPSLUserApp.mdb. Here all the information relating to the words, sounds, and user tracking is stored. Not all the information in here is needed as will be explained later. 3. The Skin files These are all the pictures relating to the program. These files are under: C:\VPSL\eyespeak\English\Skin However if you change language the “buttons?? folder is also used. E.g. if you change language to Chinese, you need the button pictures from “SIMP_CHINESE\Skin\Buttons?? The file [login to view URL] under the install directory is also used. Everything except information relating to “Thresholds?? at the bottom, and help is used. 4. The instruction/language files These are under English\[login to view URL] and Simp_Chinese\[login to view URL] These files contain all the instructions and text to appear in the program. Note: Nothing else in the data folder beside the mp3 files is needed. Also in the English folder, HelpFiles, LocalWebPages, and Skin are not used. Layout of the new app The process to get to the “Listening?? section with EyeSpeak is to follow the steps in pictures step 1-4. In the new flash based version of the application, this needs to be simplified. Steps 1-2 need to be removed, so the process is just to choose a theme, and you will be taken straight to the listening section. The functionality in the listening section is to stay the same however. The new layout for step3 needs to have functionality similar to “NewLayout1?? However the skin and look needs to be different, designed for the Chinese market. The buyer can either include the new design in their quote, providing example images, or leave it out, and provide only place-holder images, with instructions on how to change them. The listening section layout also needs to be changed, as the tabs on the left hand side don’t need to be there. There also needs to be a way for the user to change theme. A “change theme?? button is needed. Unlike in EyeSpeak, no reference to accent e.g. US/UK is needed. Database structure Open the file: Database\[login to view URL] In order to reproduce the functionality of the application, it is recommended to look at the following tables and structure in the database. • Speakers Words are either said by a male or female. In this case either by Brian or Katie. • Theme_item_types This isn’t really needed as just “listening?? is being made • Theme_items This has the words and their definition, and which theme they belong to. • Themes The list of themes a user can choose from • User_theme_progress Progress data showing the scores for each word a user attempts It would be best if a structure similar to this was user in the Flash app. Whether Flash uses databases or just straight file structure I don’t know but whatever method is chosen, it needs to be easy to edit and add themes. Storing Progress I am unsure the best way to store progress data from session to session. If this makes the project considerably more difficult, feel free to quote both with/without progress data stored. When bidding on the project, please list the software tools that will be used to make the flash app. ------------------------- Summary of deliverables: ------------------------- The following are needed 1. The functionality shown in the listening section needs to be translated into a Flash based app, to be loaded from a web page, including allowing the user to change theme. The login page and everything else in the program is not needed however. Refer to “Layout of the new app??. 2. The skin or “look?? of the program needs to be changed to fit in the Chinese market. Applicants should give an example of the “look?? they intend to use. All text in the application should be able to display both Chinese and English text. 3. The program needs to access sound files in order to run. A description should be provided of how this application is to be hosted. VPSL has a windows server running IIS, we need to know where to put the mp3 files and set things up on the server to the application will work. 4. Instructions for installing and deploying the app on a windows 2003 machine running IIS, using PHP. 5. A clear process made as simple as possible for adding new words/definitions and themes to the application. 6. A clear and simple process for changing the text or images used in the program. 7. New images consistent with 8. A description of all software tools, development environments used to make the application. When making a bid, please indicate whether progress data will be stored from session to session, also whether the images appropriate to the Chinese market will be supplied. If they are, then please give a few simple example of the kind of look to be expected. ## Platform The App needs to run on IE6,7 firefox. It needs to be installed on a windows 2003 machine running IIS, and preferably posted onto a PHP page.
