I would like a clock, run by a Stepper motor, to rotate once per hour. The motor must be strong enough to rotate a chain that weighs about 1kg, something like a nema 17. It can be controlled by Arduino or whatever means necessary. The device must only have one power source 5v or 12v dc or 240v ac. The device must fit within a 120mm (diameter) x 30mm (height) cylinder and the motor shaft must be centred in that device. It can have more height but diameter is not negotiable. The device must be posted to me in Brisbane, Australia. I will attach it in the cylinder. it would be nice for the device to be mounted to a backing board. The device will be wall mounted like a clock and powered continuously.

Hi! Your NEMA 17 instinct is reasonable, but the standard variant leaves almost no torque margin once a 1kg chain is hanging off a 30mm sprocket — and a stepper that stalls once loses its position permanently, meaning your clock drifts and never self-corrects. That's the difference between an installation that works on your bench and one that's still accurate three months later on a wall in Brisbane. My most directly relevant work is a compact motor-driven mechanism I built for a display unit with tight form-factor constraints, where the real engineering challenge wasn't the firmware — it was making the driver, controller, and power regulation fit cleanly within a defined envelope while keeping the assembly serviceable. That's the same problem you're describing here. Your 1kg chain load with a ~30mm sprocket radius requires roughly 30 N·cm of torque, which leaves a standard NEMA 17 with near-zero safety margin — but switching to a DRV8825 driver and configuring the 17HS8401 variant at 1/16 microstepping gives you ~65 N·cm holding torque while also eliminating the audible stepping noise that would be unacceptable in an art installation context. We can discuss it more in details in chat. Thanks Regards

Hi, I reviewed your rotating clock-drive project and it aligns well with my experience in embedded motion-control systems, compact electromechanical assemblies, and precision stepper-drive design. I’m an embedded hardware engineer with 15+ years of experience designing custom motorized systems using NEMA steppers, gear reduction, Arduino-based timing control, and compact PCB/power architectures for continuously operating installations. Approach: ✅ I will calculate the required holding torque and rotational inertia for the 1kg chain load, then select an appropriate NEMA17 or geared stepper configuration that fits within the strict 120mm diameter constraint. ✅ I will design a compact integrated control system including motor driver, power regulation, timing logic, and centered shaft alignment optimized for continuous 24/7 operation. ✅ I will implement highly accurate rotational timing so the shaft completes exactly one revolution per hour using step-accurate motion control with low-noise operation. ✅ I will assemble and test the complete unit on a mounting plate/backing structure, verify thermal reliability and torque stability, then prepare it for shipment to Brisbane. Questions: ✅ I need to confirm the approximate diameter/radius at which the 1kg chain load applies force to properly calculate torque requirements. ✅ I want to verify whether silent operation is important, which may affect stepper-driver and gearing selection. Hey, I can design and build a compact stepper-driven rotation system that fits inside your 120mm diameter constraint and continuously rotates the shaft once per hour while handling the load of a ~1kg chain reliably. The main engineering challenge here is balancing torque, noise, heat, and packaging inside such a tight cylindrical footprint. A standard NEMA 17 may be difficult within the 30mm height target unless the assembly is optimized carefully or geared differently. The system can include: • Stepper motor drive system • Continuous hourly rotation control • Single power input (5V, 12V, or AC adapted) • Centered output shaft • Compact internal mounting structure • Wall-mount compatible backing setup • Arduino or dedicated controller solution Atik

⚡⚡⚡Embedded Motor Control / Stepper Clock Engineer⚡⚡⚡ Hello, I have experience designing compact embedded motor control systems using Arduino/MCU platforms, including stepper-driven mechanisms with torque calculations, gear reduction, and continuous-duty operation for industrial-style motion devices. I’ve worked on constrained mechanical-electronic assemblies where space, torque, and reliability are critical. My approach is to size the stepper system (likely geared NEMA 17 or NEMA 23 with reduction), design a stable control loop for once-per-hour rotation, and ensure thermal and torque margins for a 1kg chain load within the 120mm enclosure constraint. Key technical points to confirm are required rotational torque (chain radius/load distribution), preferred power input (5V/12V/240V with PSU), and mounting constraints for shaft alignment and enclosure integration. Thanks

Hello, Creating a clock driven by a stepper motor that can handle a 1kg weight and fit within the specified dimensions is an interesting challenge. One critical aspect to consider is the torque required to ensure smooth rotation of the chain, especially given the weight. A Nema 17 stepper motor should provide adequate torque, but careful selection of the driver and power supply will be essential to ensure reliable performance over time. In my previous projects, I've worked on similar mechanical integrations and have experience with Arduino for motor control, ensuring that the design is both efficient and compact. I can help design a solution that meets the height and diameter constraints while focusing on ease of mounting and continuous power supply. To tailor the design further, I would like to clarify a couple of details: - What specific torque requirements do you have for the motor, or any preferences for the type of power source? - Are there any specific materials or aesthetics you have in mind for the backing board and mounting? Best, Andrew Rodgers
