Water Benefits for Brain
Every morning after I wake up, one of the first things I will do is to drink one full glass of water. This has become my habit since I understood the need to drink enough water. More than 70 percent of our body composes of water and each organ function relies on water, including the activities of the brain and nervous system.
The brain is one of the most important organs in our body to keep hydrated. Staying hydrated can boost our brain power, while a lack of it may cause our brain cells lose efficiency and occur several problems, such as memory deficit, headache, the deficit of focus, fatigue of brain, anger, and many others.
Water gives essential energy to our brain, keeps the nerve signals working, delivers the nutrients to our brain, and also removes the toxins. We need to get used to drinking enough water every day to keep our brain fueled and energized to do its function optimally.
Researches found that dehydration impacts the functions of our short-term memory and the recall of our long-term memory. Our capability to do the arithmetic calculation is compromised when we lack water.
In a study presented in London, researchers found that students bringing water into exams performed better than those who didn't. It showed that a simple act of bringing a bottle of water into exam could link to the improvement of students' grades. The researchers didn't know if the students really drank the water, or how much they consumed it, but the presumption was that the students should have consumed at least some of it.
Studies also have shown that if we are just one percent dehydrated, we will likely to decrease five percent of our cognitive function. If our brain drops two percent in the body fluid, we may suffer difficulties of short-term memory, problems with concentration and math calculations.
Prolonged dehydration may cause our brain cells to shrink in its size and mass. This commonly happens in the elder people who tend to be dehydrated chronically in years. Dehydration is also known as a risk factor of dementia, and proper hydration may reduce the risk factor for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
For our optimal brain function, it is recommended to drink 12 to 16 ounces of water after e wake up. Always provide a bottle of filtered water nearby. Drinking water regularly will help to keep our brain energized.
That is the reason why I habitually drink water as soon as I wake up. If you’re just as I am, after you’re reminded of the negative effects of dehydration, your next option is to head for the water.
The easiest way to get used to it is to have it in front of you. Put it at your desk, keep a big bottle next to your computer. On your daily workout, always bring one bottle of water. If you’re turned off because of the taste, you can flavor it with slices of limes/lemon, or other fresh fruits.
