I have written about Posse comitatus, the common-law, or statute law, authority of a county sheriff, or other law officer, to conscript any able-bodied man to assist him or her in county law-enforcement duties. Unfortunately, posses have often gone "off the rails" and done some pretty terrible things.
I need a political cartoon for my blog. It is old-style Blogger, which I keep thinking about upgrading, but probably will not. The posse comitatus article has run longer than usual and I would like to place a political cartoon to break up endless text. A line drawing I can make transparent, perhaps, or a regular drawing I can frame, or otherwise place will work as well (I think this will probably be better).
I am sending along an article. What I think might work might include a burning shack, and an African American being held by a posse, four men perhaps, maybe six in the foreground in front of the burning cabin. Above each man's head, in the posse, perhaps a sheriff's star which would symbolize their belief that they are helping to protect their community. One man might hold a rope, and in the background a tree for hanging, to the right of the viewer, I think. To the the left will be the sheriff, behind the men, facing the reader, trying slip past. His badge will be on his shirt.
This is just one idea, of course, but I believe it would work well as an illustration for the piece I have written. I am sending along a pdf (I subscribe to The New York Times and found it recently). Most of the stuff I write is more thesis proposal than anything else, only I reference the material in my writing. The blog is a hobby, and while I don't get a lot of readers, those who do come by are usually doing research, or looking for information about a topic. The native American historical pieces I've written get the most readers.
