ESL Tutoring, especially academic writing, as a preparation for my Graduate degree in Software Engineering. Most recent test scores: IELTS 6.0/9.0 (2014), TOEFL 71/120(2013).
San Jose is the second city I've lived in during my time in US. I'm originally from Saigon, Vietnam. I'm now living in San Jose, CA, working as an software tester under H1B working visa since 2015. For the last 2.5 years since the first time I arrived to United States, I've lived in LA South Bay area. Where I lived and worked was especially close to LAX international airport, that from my office I see international planes take off and land almost hundred times a day.
I'm planning to advance my career by pursuing further education, such as Master Degree in either Software Engineering/Quality Management. For such goal, I would need to improve my English skill, especially in (College essay) Writing, since it's the skill I'm least comfortable with. In 2013, I took practice TOEFL test with result of 71/120. I didn't make much progress since then, as all attention was on work. It's until now I see the need of pursuing further education.
The last time I made significant progress in learning English was in late 2011. That was when I took tutoring lesson with my relative, who is a linguist. We had 2-hour sessions, twice a week, in about 8 months. It was very stressful to me due to the focus was heavily on academic writing. However when looking back, I have to say I was significantly improved in all aspects. My relative is a professional linguist who know 8 Latin-based, European languages (English, French, Portuguese, Greek, ...). She's the most discipline person I've known, who has been consistently following the habit of learning 5 words a day for almost 30 years.
