I want to spin up an internet-reachable AS400/IBMi instance running DB2 so I can test ODBC calls from my Linux server. I do not have any on-prem hardware, so the whole stack must live in the cloud. I need step-by-step, detailed guidance rather than a “just done for me” hand-off; every action should be clear enough for me to repeat later. Provider choice is still open. Please walk me through the pros and cons of IBM Cloud, AWS and Google Cloud for hosting an IBMi image, including licensing, network exposure, and expected performance, then help me make the final selection. Once the platform is chosen, I will rely on you to take me through: • Provisioning the IBMi/AS400 instance and attaching DB2. • Configuring the system so it can be reached from the public internet • Verifying and, if necessary, optimising three specific SQL queries that target a system database; I will supply the exact statements. Success for me means a working, cloud-hosted IBMi that I can reach from a Linux VM via ODBC, plus cleanly executing results for my three queries.

Hi there, You’re not just looking for an IBMi box in the cloud, you need a setup you can understand, repeat, and trust when ODBC connectivity or DB2 behavior gets picky. I can guide you step by step through comparing IBM Cloud, AWS, and Google Cloud for IBMi hosting, including licensing realities, public exposure, connectivity design, and likely performance tradeoffs, then help you choose the right path. I’ve worked across Linux, cloud networking, database connectivity, and DB2/ODBC-style integrations, so I can help you provision the environment, expose it safely to the internet, validate connectivity from your Linux VM, and review your three SQL queries for execution quality and tuning opportunities. I’ll keep the process documented and reproducible rather than handing over a black box. I’ve shared an initial estimate based on your description, and once we go over a few technical or functional details, I’ll confirm the exact cost and delivery schedule. I can start with the provider comparison and decision guide, then move into provisioning, network/security setup, ODBC testing, and query verification. Do you want me to recommend the most practical cloud path first based on repeatability and licensing constraints, or have you already narrowed it down to IBM Cloud, AWS, or GCP? A few things I’d want to clarify early: do you already have a preferred Linux distro/ODBC driver stack for the client side? Will the IBMi need direct public exposure or would a VPN/bastion option al

Hello, I understand you need a fully cloud-hosted IBM i (AS/400) environment with DB2 exposed for ODBC testing from a Linux server, along with a clear step-by-step walkthrough. You also want a structured comparison of IBM Cloud, AWS, and Google Cloud in terms of IBM i availability, licensing constraints, networking exposure, and performance so you can make an informed platform choice. I will guide you through a practical architecture using either IBM Power Systems Virtual Server on IBM Cloud (preferred for native IBM i support), or alternatives on AWS and Google Cloud via VM-based setups or partner images. Once selected, I will walk you step-by-step through provisioning the instance, enabling secure public access (SSH + IBM i services), configuring DB2, setting up ODBC connectivity from Linux, and validating your three SQL queries with optimization where needed. The final deliverable will be a working IBM i cloud system, reachable from your Linux VM via ODBC, plus a repeatable deployment guide so you can rebuild or extend the setup independently. I will ensure each step is explained clearly, with troubleshooting checkpoints and security best practices included. Thanks, Asif

You need a cloud-hosted AS400/IBMi instance with DB2, reachable via ODBC from Linux, paired with hands-on guidance for repeatability. - I’ll compare IBM Cloud (native IBMi support but higher licensing costs), AWS (flexible but requires manual IBMi licensing), and Google Cloud (strong networking but limited IBMi documentation) to align with your priorities for performance, exposure, and budget. The decision will factor in your long-term repeatability needs. - For provisioning, I’ll guide you through spinning up the instance (IBM Cloud’s Power Systems or AWS EC2), attaching DB2, and configuring network rules (security groups, VPC peering, or IBM Cloud’s public gateways) to ensure controlled internet access without over-exposure. - Once connected, we’ll test your three SQL queries against the system database, optimise indexes or joins if needed, and document the exact steps for ODBC configuration on your Linux VM—including driver setup and connection string parameters. I’ll deliver a fully documented, repeatable setup in 7 days for $450, covering the scope as written; we’ll refine the figure once we walk through the missing details like query complexity and preferred cloud provider. Let’s schedule 15 minutes to clarify the queries and your network security constraints.

Hello, IBM i / AS400 cloud environments are very different from normal Linux VM setups, especially when DB2, licensing, networking, and ODBC access are involved. I’ve worked on infrastructure projects involving Linux servers, database connectivity, ODBC integrations, VPN/public exposure setup, and legacy enterprise systems requiring stable interoperability with modern cloud environments. For your project, I’d first help compare IBM Cloud, AWS, and GCP realistically from an IBM i perspective — including licensing, IBM Power availability, DB2 compatibility, public accessibility, and long-term maintainability. In practice, IBM Cloud is usually the cleanest option because native IBM Power infrastructure and licensing support are already aligned for IBM i workloads. From there, I can guide you step by step through - IBM i provisioning -DB2 configuration - public network/firewall setup - Linux ODBC driver installation - connectivity testing - SQL query verification and optimisation A few quick questions: - Which Linux distribution are you using? - Do you already have IBM i licensing? - Are the SQL queries read-only or do they perform updates/writes too? Look forward to your reply Best regards, Mickey

are you planning to run a real IBMi instance on Skytap or using a Power Systems emulator on AWS? asking because the ODBC setup is completely different for each. Skytap gives you a proper IBMi environment with DB2 and you just expose port 446, configure the iSeries Access ODBC driver on the client side and you're connecting in a day. emulator route is cheaper but driver compatibility gets messy fast and half the ODBC calls behave differently. also what are you connecting from, windows or linux? that decides which driver package we use. on windows its IBM i Access Client Solutions, on linux its unixODBC with the IBM ODBC driver and that one needs some extra config to get DB2 talking properly. the DB2 side is straightforward once the network is right, its usually the NAT and firewall rules for port 446 that trip people up. can start today and have you a working ODBC connection by end of week. send me the full setup details and ill put a plan together.

Hello, The primary engineering challenge is ensuring the AS400/IBMi instance is securely accessible from the public internet while managing network exposure. Another concern is optimizing the DB2 configuration to maintain performance under varying loads during ODBC interactions. Will the ODBC calls require real-time data updates, or are they batch processes? What are the expected traffic levels to and from the IBMi instance? Additionally, how do you envision the licensing model impacting your budget for each cloud provider? I am ready to assist you through this process to achieve a functional and accessible cloud-hosted IBMi environment.
