3D scenes in real time

Aim of the project:

Write a program that renders 3D scenes in real time in the style of Roy Lichtenstein.

Your development environment should be NetBeans 5.5 with JDK 5.0:

To run the TestChooser, I recommand copying the long command into a .bat file.

skip the steps that deal with physics for now.

There is a very active user community, you should ask for advice on the forum if you are stuck.

Breakdown of tasks:

-model a few test scenes that will serve to illustrate your program. There should at least be a room interior, and a human face (I recommend using blender for modelling: [url removed, login to view]). You can grab individual models on the internet, but the scene compositions should be yours.

-import the models in JMonkey and animate the camera to show that the rendering is in real-time

-understand how to modify the rendering style in JMonkey ([url removed, login to view]) and implement as many Lichtenstein style features as you can. In order of decreasing importance:

1) Black outlines of the silhouettes and of the sharp features (have a look at the SketchRenderPass, and read about "toon shading")

2) Stipples (the regularly placed colored dots). You should find a way to make the dots follow the objects when they move.

3) Highlights: dots disappear or get suddenly lighter to signal highlights (like on the plate). Read about "cell shading" to understand how to do it.

4) Thick black shadows.

5) Hatching: regular parallel black lines on some surfaces (wall in living room)
