Hi, I am located in chicago . with good experience in aws migration and server stacks. for purchasing using Reserved instances - be careful with the duration as pricing changes with the time duration and payment method. full upfront, partial upfront or no upfront . also aws locks you in for RI to 1yer -3 yrs , but you can get shorter duration from aws marketplace for the type of instance you want to upgrade to.

Migrating the instance to a larger instance is not a problem. I've done this multiple times on enterprise systems. I presume if you are using free tier your on a t2.micro. If not, it doesn't really change the migration at all. We will need to do a snapshot prior to moving to the new instance, also unless you have an Elastic IP address we will need to update any DNS records for the public IP as you won't be able to keep it. Your internal IP will also change if you are utilizing that. This can be done in a 4 hour maintenance window, however it typically does not take anywhere near that long to complete.
