Job Description:
I have two pieces of Python code written for by a friend - each takes takes a corpus of English words and applies some rules to them to create an output. Unfortunately he's not free to help with the next bit of the project. Here are his instructions about what needs to happen next:
In both programs there's a line from english_words import english_words_set, which loads the word list from the english_words library. Then later on there are a couple of places where the variable english_words_set is used. We need to:
- Find an equivalent list of French words from somewhere (there'll be one on the Internet, perhaps from an open-source spellchecker that's been localised into French)
- Load it into a Python list from a file
- Wherever the program refers to english_words_set, make it possible to pass in a different word list instead
- Add some user interface for switching the word list
- Work out what to do about non-English characters. The list of characters is currently hard-coded, but that doesn't seem to be a fundamental restriction and we could potentially even generate it from the word list itself.
I'd like to be able to do this for French and Latin. I'm not so concerned about the non-English characters in French.
My friend suggested it might be about 3 hours' work to do it nicely, or 1-2 hours for a working solution (it really is just switching languages, which happens to involve taking a Python internal data set and substituting in a non-internal one, making a bit of added complexity). I'm not really fussed about being able to switch languages on an interface either - it can be three separate (or six, because there are two algo/s for each language) programs.
