Word footer automation to add doc number

I want to insert a document number into a Word footer automatically whenever a document is saved. The document number comes from our document management software. I currently have two ways to add the document number: I have a macro that adds the document number manually once one is established, which is not ideal. I can also replace the footer automatically upon save using existing automation, but the problem with this is that it replaces the entire footer instead of appending the doc number. I need it to append the doc number non-intrusively.
