Contest Brief

Book Title - Black Friday
Subtitle - An American Jihad
Size - 6"x9"
Graphic - Full Color

Synopsis - At the height of holiday season, busy shopping centers are attacked by terrorists with bulletproof vests and assault rifles. From coast to coast, America comes under brutal attack and the terrorists are just getting started. Further attacks take place at grocery stores, as people try and stockpile food. "Black Friday" becomes the bloodiest attack in American history.

Graphic Ideas and Thoughts - I want to create a bold but simple and clean design. I have some ideas but am also open to any suggestions you may have. Below are some basic ideas to jumpstart the process. Nothing is in stone and these are just ideas, but these are some basic ideas I have.

- The word "Black" to be colored red and appear that blood is dripping from the letters. The letter would appear to be bleeding or even glisten like wet blood, reflecting glints of light.

- The word "Friday" would be in a different color, probably black.

- A ghost image of a US Map in the background, barely visible.

- Silhouette image if AR-15 rifle below book title or subtitle or the crosshairs of a rifle scope.

- Different size bullet holes in the cover of the book. Open to suggestions on the size and number , but they should appear realistic and not cartoonish.

- A burning American flag.

Obviously, all these ideas can't be used on one cover and maintain a simplistic design, which is important. The cover should be simple, clean and easy to read. You will be free to take these ideas and mold them into your own.

REQUIREMENT - The final image will need to be submitted in Adobe Illustrator AND High Res Jpeg.

    The best graphic design comes from giving the client what they need, and not exactly what they want. No other design looked like my entry, and the cover so clearly conveys the concept and idea of terrorism in the way that it assaults the viewer's eyes uninhibited.

      I didn't give you the common things like blood, a rifle, a burning US flag or a map of the US. I designed what your book needed; terror. Unhinged terror, in the most straight-forward, black-and-white way possible.
      So I'm just a tiny bit confused as to not receiving even a tiny critique?

      Thanks for your comment and entry, which wasn’t bad. We just wanted to see red. That’s important. We also need to convey the season of holiday shopping and Christmas. Please submit another design. Your letter style was unique but was overwhelming. We like the letter style but would like to see red drilling over the word black.

    This takes place during holiday shopping for Christmas. It’s inportant to convey that it’s during the holidays. It takes place on Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving. This is a huge holiday shopping day in the US.

    The name “Black Friday” should be large
    The subtitle should be smaller
    Author name should be even smaller and at the bottom of the page.
