Contest Brief

We are a startup luxury cosmetics brand. We are looking for an author to help us create a serial novel based on the life of one or more main characters with a desirable lifestyle. Our main purpose is to foster our brand image in a subtle yet exciting manner. The idea is to add episodes on a regular basis and thus create a coherent story. At the same time, each episode or column, should also be a satisfying read on its own.

The purpose of our contest is to find a suitable writer to work with us on a longterm basis. It is our intention to create a working relationship which allows a talented candidate to fully unfold his or her potential.

It is our wish to create a continuing string of episodes portraying the life of a fictional female main character, perhaps as a serial novel, at a pace of one new episode every one or two weeks, comprising 300 - 1000 words per episode/story.

The ideal candidate is a creative writer with extraordinary competencies in the following areas:

o Empathy
o Creativity
o Articulateness
o Common Sense

The Contest / Writing Assignment

1. Pilot Episode (min. 700 words)

Write a pilot episode to lay a solid foundation for future episodes of our serial novel. Craft characters that will allow our customers to relate to and build strong identification with. Leave readers craving for the next episode.

2. Explanation and Rationale

Please explain in detail what was your thinking behind the plot and the characters in the pilot episode.

Key Attributes of Main Character (female)

o Is likeable and charismatic
o Leads a desirable avantgarde lifestyle
o Likes to differentiate herself from her peers
o Travels regularly in style and luxury
o Leads a global, urban lifestyle

Please submit both parts one and two in order to make a qualified entry to the contest.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

The main character should be female. And even though she leads an enviable lifestyle she should be down to earth and stay within reach.

      Hello goldenhugs,
The 'pilot episode' refers to the first episode of a series. It could be about a person working as a pilot, but not necessarily. Hope that helps :)

I will be working on an entry soon as well! So you want a script like for a show or an actual story like in a novel? If you could rate some entries or give us an idea of what youre seeing that you like so far and what you dont like that would be very helpful!

We are looking for a written-out text, novel or short-story style. So far, some of the female main characters in the entries were too much out-of-toch with the real world. Please create female lead characters who are sympatico and "real".

Is it not possible to rate entries while the contest is sealed? I didn't try and work the products into the pilot, as I thought that might feel a little forced and insincere. Also, my protagonist is the only character introduced so far that the target demographic will probably identify with. It's hard to lay the foundation of a novel in so few words, and while I think I wrote an engaging piece, I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for. Would you consider giving it a look over? Some feedback might help me craft a piece that's more in line with what you want. Thanks!

To clarify, I don't think working the products in is a bad idea, as I understand that is the overarching objective of the novel; I just meant that to do so in the pilot might feel a little forced.

So do you prefer if it`s written in first person from her persepctive, or not necessarily as long as the ideas you are looking for are conveyed in the story ? :)

Do you have any genre preference, or are you open to anything? Romance or drama seem like safe bets, but I'm wondering if you'd consider other genres - like mystery, perhaps?

Perhaps you could try a diary? I think using a journal is a good means to keep our characters grounded which is very important as you will see in my other comments.

Some questions: 1) How deeply do you want the brand incorporated into the story? Should the protagonist be an employee or just a customer? 2) What do you mean you say "script-style"? Is the series written as prose or is it a series of short films/videos? 3) Could you mention some of the products you market, so we can work them into the narrative?

      1) Just a customer, or even a potential customer only.
      2) like a written-out text/novel, prose.
      3) skincare products, like anti-aging facial cream, serums, masks
