Contest Brief

Colorize a historic photo and add some new image elements - digital painting.

1. This new colorized digital photo/painting should be at TWILIGHT, with dark blue sky, overall nighttime look.

2. Do NOT feature trees or plants in the digital painting image, as trees or plants would move in the wind which is impossible to recreate that movement in a matte painting, so to avoid that issue, only feature solid objects that do not move.

3. Try to make this new digital image photo-realistic, as this will be used in a movie as an establishing shot.

4. There are two neon signs to be added to this image. Please note the Pawn Shop neon sign (see other instructions attached to this contest) should retain the exact shape, as this is the typical style of a Hong Kong pawn shop sign. The other neon sign for the “Pearl Club” will be both in English & Chinese characters. If needed, here are the Chinese characters you can copy & paste for each sign.

5. Make sure to reference the PDF provided to this contest, as it provides important details you will find useful for guidance for your digital work.

6. We need this photo to look like people are living inside most of the building units. Therefore need some interior light spill that is seen on the exterior of windows & balconies. The ground floor sidewalk area that is visible should feature some illumination on the sidewalk area from light bulbs that would exist (but maybe not seen) in the ceiling of these walkway areas. Basically the master photo was taken in the daytime, but to make it a nighttime photo, we need to add illumination to some of the building areas.

7. The final digital image size is to be 3840 X 2160 pixels in RGB color. The final delivery of the digital image would be a PNG file. Attached to this contest is a historic Black & White master photo that you will use for this job.

    Update: My previous artist instructions had the Chinese characters reading backwards. In the 19th Century the Chinese displayed their text differently, than those neon sign today. Therefore I have updated all the guidelines on this contest to reflect this change. Here is the updated Chinese characters in the order they should be displayed.

      I have rejected your last two entries, as they are basically exact copies of another entry (even the color/reflections of the shadow areas matched). All artists need to do original work starting from the master photo supplied. It is fine to view the general trend of designs that I favor, and then work on your own original design.
