PART A – MANDATORY: JOB DESCRIPTION

This section will be completed by all student groups of 3 and submitted with the Part B option chosen by the group.

This section introduces two major human resource management skills

-- writing a job description and justifying the design of your job description.

PROCEDURE:

Students will develop and write one job description for a job which they will later use to complete their chosen option for Part B (one of Options 1 - 4). Choose a job with which you are familiar so that your description is an accurate and comprehensive document.

PART B, OPTION 4: PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL REPORT

GROUPS OF 3 ASSIGNMENT

This project introduces the human resource function of performance appraisal. Here you will use the job description completed as part of Part A to develop a performance appraisal form based on job-related duties and responsibilities.

PROCEDURE

[url removed, login to view] will develop a performance appraisal form that could be used for the job. You must choose a system of assessing performance (eg. critical incidents, rating (1,2,3,4) etc). You MUST use 5 or more methods for maximum marks and incorporate specific content from the job description in Part A. All sections must have clear instructions for using that section.

2. Discuss why you chose the methods. Specifically describe why each chosen method contributes to a meaningful assessment of employee performance in this job.

3. Design directions or advice that would be passed on to line managers who will be assessing the performance of their employees using the performance appraisal forms. Remember, line managers must

· prepare ahead of the interview (4 actions),

· conduct an effective interview(6 actions- 2 general comments then 4 actions linked directly to your PA form), and follow up after the interview. (4 actions)

Your advice to managers must cover all these areas and specifically relate to the design of your performance appraisal form. Do not discuss “generalities” but use your PA form as a guide in advising managers.
