I have completed a 6 question survey of student nurse anesthetists (SRNA) at three local anesthesia schools. This survey wanted to know how current students feel about the opportunity to complete a pediatric fellowship post graduation with their masters degree in nurse anesthesia. The purpose of this research is to explore SRNA feelings and perceptions of the benefits of a post certification pediatric fellowship.
Background: Inadequate specialty training for the newly graduated Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a concern of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetist (AANA) Council on Accreditation (COA). In response to this, the COA announced the implementation of new guidelines for the creation of specialty post-certification fellowships, which were fully implemented at the end of 2014. There are few studies presently available regarding Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) fellowships, and, there is no research available regarding CRNA fellowships that could be located. However, there has been a great deal of work done regarding New Graduate Registered Nurse (NGRN) residencies. Principle findings demonstrate that nurse residencies are highly favorable in terms of new graduate job performance, employment satisfaction, and employer loyalty when compared to non-residency participants. The purpose of this research is to explore present pediatric care educational practices, and, to determine if the student nurse anesthetist (SRNA) feels they would benefit from a critical pediatric fellowship in the months following their initial certification.
