Web based accomodation booking system - MYSQL 5.7 to 8 upgrade query error resolution

Due a recent MySQL (5.7 to 8.0) upgrade by our hosting company, we require some major version change breaking corrections made to some existing mysql queries in our PHP pages due to this upgrade.
These changes relate to variables and expressions in SET and SELECT statements, and require someone with the specific and demonstrable knowledge of MySQL 8.0 and these changes, with the referenced error:
Warning: #1287 Setting user variables within expressions is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. Consider alternatives: 'SET variable=expression, ...', or 'SELECT expression(s) INTO variables(s)'.
We have a handful of files that will need modifying to meet the major changes and that report the above error, and to check the other PHP files containing mysql queries just for general compliance (we dont think theres any other issues however)
