The purpose of the assignment is to model a simple USRT (Universal Synchronous Receiver Transmitter). It is called a USRT (and not a UART) because it is totally synchronous, i.e., the transmitter and receiver have the same clock. The USRT data word is a start bit (always 0) followed by 8 data bits. There is no parity. Figure 1 below gives a block diagram of the USRT
