We want an advanced script for ArcGIS that does the following: Combines two (or more) Polygon Shape files into one like this: polygons that have "A" attributes from one shape-file and are within a specific distance (buffer, e.g. 20 meters) from polygons with "B" attributes of the other shape-file will be combined in one polygon (the borders of the "weak" polygon will be reshaped exactly on the borders of the "strong polygon"), depending on which polygon ranks above the other. But this can get complicated: most of the times only some parts (sides) of one polygon will need reshaping on the borders of the other polygon (remember that these will be polygons belonging to different shape files). Maybe it would be more efficient to have everything work inside a geodatabase, but what we ask can be very tricky, needing advanced geometry-programming.

Dear quirkytoe! I am preliminarily interested in your proposal, however I can't post yet to the Clarification Board, so here are some questons: 1. What should happen if the two polygons aren't overlapping? Just use a multipolygon type or should some "bridge" be created? 2. By reshaping, you mean changing the geometry to that of the strong polygon? 2.1. If that is so, what should happen if the reshaped and strong polygon don't overlap? 2.2. It sounded like you just want their intersection to disappear and perhaps the weak one to assimilate the strong one. 3. Do you care about holes/rings in the polygons at all? 4. Do you accept non-ArcGIS scripts? There are several capable opensource python libraries out there and if the solution used them, you'd have two benefits: it wouldn't get broken if Esri changes their scripting API and you could run it on systems without ArcGIS (in case you ever migrate). 5. What should happen in the case that the buffer matches several features in the other shape? The ordering of operations could affect the end result. A quick sketch would be helpful, as it is not clear whether there should be any merging involved or just vertex addition/removal and repositioning. Have a nice day!
