The statue is supposed to be a that of a young girl called Molly Malone, the subject of Dublin’s unofficial anthem of the same name. The song, often known by the names “Cockles and Mussels” and “In Dublin’s Fair City”, is about a young fishmonger who sold the aforementioned cockles and mussels in the city and died young because of a fever. She is believed to have been fishmonger by day and prostitute by night or alternatively one of the few chaste tradeswomen in the city at the time. There is no actual evidence of her existence, but, in 1988 during the Dublin Millennium celebrations, the Dublin Millennium Commission declared her real and decreed that June 13 be celebrated as Molly Malone day. The iconic statue was unveiled during the same celebrations by the then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ben Briscoe.
This was part of an article about the Molly Malone statue in Dublin.
