Hello. I made 2 designes of similar devices for local customers. There is several options available for sensors of presense: -PIR-sensor -ultrasonic sensor -IR-optocouple (2 or more - depends of required behaviour of device) -capacitance sensor Every design have some pro and cons in different conditions( for example, capacitance sensor is most invisible, but installation is not possible in some conditions). So, discussion about behaviour of lighting and possibility of installation of sensor is required. Price is not includes cost of power supply. Specialized PSU is awailable, if smaller size is preferrable. Also, usage of computer power supply is possible for that device . Delivery from Ukraine to GB costs about 30$ (usual mail) for 2 Kg. Hi there! I am Pranav, from India! I was just going through your project and figured out that it's very close to a project I had created some time back. That was a proof of concept for intelligent street lighting with a similar idea. One difference though is that that was a network of wireless PIR sensors communicating with each other, while here it can be just one or two (top and bottom of stairs) sensors feeding into a central controller board. I plan to use PIR sensors here, as those are the best suitable for human motion detection. Another option could be to use IR reflectance sensors. Both have their pros and cons. On the controller and UI front I plan to use a 8 bit microcontroller with a Touchscreen LCD, or a passive monochrome LCD with push buttons. Your requirement of 12VDC input supply eases the task of power conversion, so that's no hassle. As far as controlling is concerned, 12W into 12V LED gives 1A/channel. Any 10A N channel MOSFET will work good here. PWM can be used for fading and dimming. An LDR can be used to detect if lights need to be dim at night, etc. I understand the user selectability business, and I stand by it. It's a must have!
