Add Google analytics code to my existing site

I launched an e-commerce site a few weeks ago, and I need to add some code to be able to track clicks on my shopping cart through Google Analytics (which is an external link).
Here's the code that Google Analytics says should be used: [login to view URL];answer=55527
My web programmer couldn't get this to work. So, I'm hoping to find someone who has done this before on another site.
