Data Compression/Decompression code in 'C'

I currently have data files on my hard drive that I access using fopen, fread, and fwrite in my 'C' programs. Although some of these files are 1200K in size, when I zip them up, they shrink down to about 30K!!! What I want is versions of fread/fopen/fwrite that will utilise the zipped version instead so that I dont have to use the files in their large unzipped format again. If you cant make it work with Zipped files then I would be happy for it to work with any other compressed format that is easy to use. Properly Commented code please.
