Custom Wordpress Plugin

We need a way to change the anchor text that is used in the navigation menu. As you know, by default, Wordpress uses the post/Page title for the link in the menu. But that either results in a menu link that is too long or a title that is not descriptive in order to keep the menu link short. Maybe using the slug without dashes (if that's possible) would be a good solution. Or maybe some way to use a Custom Field. The plugin I just discovered allows the user to create an 'alias' which is used in the navigation link but does this from a separate admin panel so you have to create the Page/post then go to a separate admin panel to change the alias. This is not ideal in my opinion as you should be able to change it on the Write admin panel when creeating the post/Page. That's very long for a sidebar so I want the link in the menu to read "Memorable Weekend Getaways". Must work with widgets and 'play nice' with other plugins.
