**Specifications for database**
The objective of the database is to manage in and outgoing links from my website to other peoples sites.
The database needs to reside on a dedicated server where also the websites will be hosted on the very same server. The operating system of the dedicated server should preferably be Linux or similar non-windows operating system - however, I will also consider windows operatingsystems and database if the coder can clarify why this is bettter to use.
The reason why I am probably more inclined to the non-windows operating system and database is more likely to cost, speed and stability issues. However, I am a non-techie and will leave that part up tot he chosen coder.
The hardware on the dedicated server will be an Athlon 2.0 GH with 256 MB RAM and 30 GB hdd.
The user (who will have 1 2.5 GH Athlon with 1 GB RAM) who will update/maintain the database will have a dial up connection (56 k modem) and therefore the data from the server to the user needs to be compressed in some way with Gzip or similar. I assume that the user will simply connect to the database using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher - however, this is not a requirement if a better soluton is available/suggested.
It is important that the database is fast and that especially that it is fast when the user updates the database (so, the less data and/or the more compressed the data is sent over the internet ??" the better).

Dont be "hung up" hether the specifications indicate a windows or non-windows environment/database. These are simply specifications about what the program should do more than which whether a windows or non-windows environment should be used.
So, nothing is "written in stone" when it comes tot eh windows/non-windows issue.
***Important***If too difficult to put the database on a dedicated server to start with: then a solution could also simply be to incorporate as many features as possible into a MS Access database that resides on my computer (and thereby eliminate need for the dedicated server) and then later on move the database to a dedicated server if/as the need arises.
