To take over your server the attacker needs to somehow get a "shell" and use it to take over your website, here's what he can do: 1- Scan your server ports, find vulnerabilities in your services and exploit them 2- Find vulnerabilities in your "web app", basically your website, and exploit them; vulnerabilities such as SQLi ([login to view URL]) or RCE ([login to view URL]) which will allow him to steal your user database or execute commands on your server. 3- Bruteforce your ssh login or your admin password These are his "only ways" in, it has to be either by exploiting your services, your webapp or simply by guessing your passwords. Here's what we can do to prevent all this: 1- Install a firewall such as UFW ([login to view URL]) which will block incoming and outgoing connections on ports that we DON'T want, this way we will limit the types of attacks. 2- Setup a WAF([login to view URL]) to prevent Sql Injections and a PHP security extension([login to view URL]) to prevent strong shells such as DAws ([login to view URL]) 3- Path your PHP code and make sure it's secure. 4- Setup Bruteforce protection on your admin panel and ssh.
