Poor Man’s GPS Windows XP application that leverages wardriving data to create a simulated GPS device for other applications to utilize via a virtual COM port. User manually downloads wardriving data from public database which contains MAC addresses and Lat/Long coordinates for access points in metro area. Application uses Windows XP NDIS interface to scan for 802.11 access points. When it identifies an access point, it checks wardriving data stored locally, and submits location information (Lat/Long) via a virtual COM port using NMEA format. So someone using MapPoint or StreetAtlas and a Wi-Fi card can obtain location position (within a hundred or so feet) without having a $250 GPS device.
