Report on ankylosing spondylitis, targeted at helping patients live better

I am looking for a health writer with experience writing to a consumer health audience. I am a physician and I have a back condition called ankylosing spondylitis. AS is an autoimmune condition that often begins in young adulthood (mine started in my late teens). There are not many resources available for my patients and those that are available are often negative in tone, very clinical, and no one wants to read them. I often counsel my patients with AS about what I have dubbed the “Ankylosing spondylitis pyramid.” At the base of the pyramid is lifestyle, especially exercise, diet and home remedies. At the top of the pyramid is medication. I am not discounting medicine at all as medical research shows it’s vital for long-term success with AS. And also not suggesting someone try lifestyle remedies to the exclusion of medicine. The AS pyramid is a mental concept in that I want my patients to primarily rely on healthy living for successful management of their AS – not medicine. Medicine is vital but without the proper lifestyle, the benefit of medicine is severely limited. Since I don’t have time to fully counsel my patients on successful living with AS, I want to write an uplifting, positive report for them on this concept. I cannot find the time to get the necessary information down on “paper,” so I’m looking for one or more health writers to help me produce a series of helpful reports for my patients – not just on AS but on any health issue as I would rather they rely on information I can vouch for rather than random information that may or may not be correct. Below is a blueprint of what I want you to write. A competitive bid from an experienced health writer could lead to more work in the future. On that note, if you have any health topics that are of particular interest to you and you feel could be helpful to my patients, I am very open to ideas. IMPORTANT: The tone of the report must be POSITIVE. One of the biggest complaints of those reading up on AS is that the information is so negative. Much of it is written by health professionals who take a “just the facts” approach and forget that the point of the information is to uplift people and inspire them to live better and not let AS define them. In addition, I want the patient to feel that their destiny rests in their hands in that if they actively manage their AS instead of just relying on the medicine to ease the pain and stiffness their odds of successful living with AS are astronomically higher. The report must be written with a casual, approachable style, as if someone is talking to a family member (not a doctor talking to a patient even though the report should be written as if it’s from me). While I am looking for a very good writer, I need someone that is comfortable with a light, friendly tone. I want the report to be written in the first person as if I’m talking directly to my patients. Use first person “I” and second person “you” and avoid third person usage unless necessary (e.g. when talking about possible complications of AS given that the person I’m “talking” to hopefully will take steps to avoid those and the issue doesn’t directly relate to them. I am looking for a 10,000 to 15,000 word report. While I want to include the “facts” and the expected basic information about AS (causes, symptoms, treatments etc), I want to approach it from a positive position and not “doom and gloom.” One of the other major complaints of current AS information is that it’s overly complicated and not written for a consumer health audience. I want the information to be written for a 7th grade audience – or as close as possible. If you’re not familiar with this concept, this project is not likely for you. Please include headers and subheads and make the information very scannable and not dense. Want to content as engaging as possible.
