Drawing upon 200 interviews of corporate managers in Dubai and Bangalore from 2010-2012, the author explores the crosscutting and often conflicted identities of people caught in the currents of global capitalism and global religion. In the corporation, “Mercenaries” structure their identity through “apprehensive individualism:” the relentless pursuit of personal advancement as a path to maximizing income and consumerism. Living without loyalty to the corporation, and navigating the antagonistic cooperation of team work rife with cutthroat competition, work lacks ultimate meaning as a calling. Through their participation as “Missionaries” in evangelical charismatic Catholic congregations, they embrace a countervailing “therapeutic individualism” that rejuvenates and sustains them through a personal relationship with Jesus and a sense of belonging and witness in a church community.
Vaidyanathan develops a moral sociology to examine how men and women of the global corporation attempt to integrate religious practice in their work, and utilize religious norms to achieve “escape velocity” from the insatiable demands of consumerism financed by many with ruinous personal debt.
