Fix image stretching problem on Woocommerce "products" page

We have a website which is based on WooCommerce (but is not e-commerce). It works fine but the PRODUCTS (summary) page, and also the "YOU MAY ALSO LIKE" section at the bottom of the page displays product images as stretched.
PLEASE NOTE - changing the aspect ratio of the image is probably NOT the solution because these SQUARE images are used by each product page). The problem comes from WooCommerce wanting to use the same image in two different aspect ratios.
Please analyse the problem and implement a proper fix which is NOT just to change the aspect ratio of the product images.
I think actually its a simple fix for somebody who is experienced with this platform.
