Your task:
The MD has tasked you with the following main items:
a) Identify the current environmental performance of the ‘Simple Shed’. What is its Carbon
Footprint (via IPCC 2007 (100yrs)) and which are the other most significant impacts when
assessed using EcoIndicator-99 Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methodology?
b) Highlight segments of the product lifecycle that pose the most significant burdens within the
overall environmental impacts
c) Innovate to improve the environmental performance in key impact areas: Provide a list of
potential innovation areas – targeted around the major process contributions.
d) Present your findings in the form of a powerpoint (PPT) presentation with no more than 10
slides.
This will involve the following:
Accessing SimaPro 7 via VPN, as outlined in the ‘Using SimaPro via remote desktop’
document
Creating an LCA model for your product ‘Simple Shed’ by following the SimaPro7 Woodshed
tutorial lesson 2 (chapter 3 onwards) and using the file
‘IEM_TechRes_Woodshed_PS_Tutorial’ example within SimaPro
Performing the impact assessment and interpretation required
Developing your PPT to present your results
As with all LCAs, whilst generation of the model is the foundation of the study, it is the extraction of
information and interpretation that is the key to unlocking the potential use as a PS tool. You need
to identify which information from the analyses is the most appropriate for your purpose (both eco-
innovation and communication) and what is the best way of presenting your findings to Mrs Iem
such that the salient points will be adequately conveyed to someone who has hitherto had no
exposure to LCA results & data.
n.b. within your presentation it would be most useful to present a flowchart of the product system.
