We have started with a working Yocto Dunfell release from NXP that provides a limited OS. We have a layer from other manufacturers that permits building a Ubuntu-like release in Yocto, but are having trouble getting this layer to work with the NXP Dunfell.

I have first hand experience with Yocto dunfell and have integrated different layers for a variety of feature sets. I have worked on releases with Wayland as well as Xorg. I need to have a look at what challenges you are facing in particular and where your build breaks exactly. It also appears like some further communication to clarify feature sets may be required.
