I have a dataset of 2.5million records (id, reference) stored in comma separated text file, Each ID is associated with 1 of 5 references. e.g. 1B3242MK,A 2C003212KL,S L001DH728,A I have a web version of a tool using php and MySQL that when you type in an id will return a web address based on the reference. eg. A,[login to view URL] C,[login to view URL] L,[login to view URL] R,[login to view URL] S,[login to view URL] What I need is a standalone version for offline use. I had set up an excel spreadsheet where the user enters the ID and is return the URL via a VLOOKUP in a VLOOKUP but unfortunately excel will only handle 1,048,000 rows and at the moment the dataset is 2.5million rows (and 30Mb). The application should not 'install' anything into the client PC. The data is likely to be updated quarterly so this will need to be reusable. Please explain how you will approach the solution rather than simply say you can do it as I do not have time to waste - otherwise I'd google a solution!

Good evening, I'd use Delphi and codebase dbf database. it's the fastest way to do a look up in a dataset; then a simple form with an input box and a button. on enter the Id I lookup the reference then if you wish I'd launch the browser to that web address. Please accept my best regards Augusto Pellis

Hello, I think I can do the project. I would like to write a macro that reads the data to excel sheet - split the file into parts, and write in columns. The first part of the data in columns "A - B", another in columns "D -E", etc. This way you can bypass the limitation of the number of rows in excel. The second macro should search for data in the worksheet. If you have any questions I will be happy to answer. Best Regards Jan Krzyzak

Hello, Not really a good idea to use Excel for 2.5mil records dataset I would say. The data should definitely be stored in some kind of database. I can build a simple Java application. It will use sqlite database as a storage area for your dataset. Then no problem to lookup the reference as you need it. For the quarterly updates, there will be an option to import or update the data from the CSV file. Or it can import the data directly from MySql database if you prefer. The application will work on Windows/Linux (and possibly MAC). No installation required as Java is part of any standard Windows/Linux desktop. Cheers, David.

I have worked extensively in Excel specializing in VBA and automated data transformation for 10 years. I have completed many tasks just like this at my prior employeer. My process here would be to design a excel book that picks up the list and stores it using an array and then loops thru the array on demand to return results. I will include a button to refresh the data file on demand so when you get an update while you have the spreadsheet open, you need only to push a button to pull the new data into the code. If you have questions on my approach, let me know. I would be happy to speak more on this if you need.
