INTRODUCTION TO GOTHIC SYMBOL
Gothic symbols are outfits worn to add extra glamour to ones personality. Each has got its own meaning and effect. It can be used to adorn anything from your hairclip to shoes. Some wear these symbols upside down to get the reverse effect.
Some of the popular Gothic symbols are:
1. Pentagram, five pointed star with the goat’s head: This is a very powerful symbol of Satanism and witchcraft. A different form of pentagram is used for black magic. When it is used for black magic, the pentagram is called “footprint of the devil”. The star with two points upward is called the” Goat of Mendes”, the god of witches as it has the same shape of a goat’s head. When the star turns and the upper point falls down, it shows the fall of a rising sun. A pentagram without goat’s head represents long life and health. It is a symbol of white magic and is used against all evil and supernatural forces.
2. Ankh: It looks similar to the Christian cross. It is the symbol of eternal life and it has got strong cultural significance. The gothic ankh with its top looped represents the womb, a symbolic form of life. It is a symbol that is very commonly used in Egyptian art, where the gods and goddesses show clutching the ankh. It is worn for prosperity and long life. According to another theory, ankh loop symbolizes the sun rising above the horizon. The area below the vertical bar shows the path of the sun
3. Cross: It is the oldest and widely used symbol. They are usually dark and are popular among gothic and vampire cultures. The horizontal beam of cross symbolizes the feminine part that is the earthliness, destruction and the death. The vertical beam shows the masculine counterparts that is the creative, active and fullness of life. It also considered to be the symbol of pain, anger and depression. They are often combined with daggers. An inverted cross is the symbol of Satan and evil spirits.
4. Eyes of Horus: This represents the eye of Egyptian sun God who lost eye in a battle. It is an ancient symbol of protection and power. It is given as craft work for children in school. It is used to get rid of evils.
The recent trend is the gothic signs sketching to T-shirts and tattooing over body parts.
